What are your reception hours?
Year round | 9am to 12pm
Summer | 3:00pm - 8:00pm
Winter | 3:30pm - 5:30pm
In case you arrive after hours, please contact us during reception hours and we'll leave you instructions to find your room at the reception. Our hostel is closed after 10:00pm for check-ins.
What is the earliest we can check in?
You can arrive early and use the communal space. Bedrooms are ready for check-in from 2:30pm
What time is check out? What if our bus leaves in the afternoon?
Check out is at 10am for all bedrooms. We have a courtesy period until 11am in the communal space but please refrain from using kitchens and bathrooms after 10am, as we need to prepare for the day ahead. Late room check-out up to 1pm can be arranged for a $20 fee.
Can I use facilities during the day if I arrive early or am leaving Nelson late?
Yes you can for a day stay fee of $10. This enables you to use all communal spaces such as kitchen, bathrooms, wifi and our sunny yard. This fee applies for staying between 10am (checkout) and 8pm (reception closing). This needs to be arranged at reception.
How far are you from the town centre?
This is a great location. Far enough from the noise of the town centre. Close enough to what you need and with the ease and security of free off street parking.
Are you able to store luggage whilst in the national parks?
Yes, no problem and this is FREE of charge in-between stays or $2 per day if not coming back to stay. We have a locked luggage room and safe for smaller valuables.
Are we able to leave our car whilst we are in the national park?
We can park up your car in an alternative area, so as not to take up car parks. Parking for less than a week is preferable. So let us know if you wish to do this.
Is the hostel suitable for children?
This is a relaxed sociable hostel with a big garden. We do not attract the young drinkers as they find it hard to stagger the 15 minutes walk to town. So we are a perfect backpacker for children. We have a specific family room with it's own bathroom.We are keen on the correct atmosphere and consideration in regards to noise. Children have to be with their parent/guardian at all times in our communal areas.
Is alcohol allowed?
You may bring your own alcohol and drink in the communal areas, garden and private rooms. Its part of the atmosphere to enjoy a glass of wine or beer whilst having dinner and chatting with other guests from around the world.
This is not a party hostel and group 'drinking sessions' will not be tolerated, if they impact on other guests whether they are sleeping or sharing the space. Our 24 hour on site staff manage this strictly. We are happy to recommend other hostels that tolerate this behaviour.
What people come and stay at the bug?
We attract a very varied demographic of independent travellers. From guests in their 60s+, to young adults and families with children. The atmosphere our environment creates causes a wonderful interaction from people of different cultures and generations. Nobody looks or feels out of place at the Bug. This is because the outlook is the same. Spending a short period of time in a relaxed, clean and modern environment whilst happily accessing this great part of the world.
Is linen and towels supplied in all rooms?
All required bedding is provided. Your comfort and warmth is our priority. We use pressed hotel standard sheets for that ultimate feeling of clean, comfort away from home. Studio and Ensuite rooms also include a towel. Hire towels available for $2.
Do you take bookings for groups?
We normally have a maximum of 4 people travelling together in the summer months. However, we can take larger groups organised in advance as we can often accommodate a group in a self-contained private area away from other guests.

Check in is available from 2:30pm unless an early check in has been prearranged or agreed with reception. Check-out is strictly by 10.00 am unless a late checkout has been arranged with reception staff. Valid photo ID and confirmation of credit card details are required upon check-in. No heck-ins or late arrivals after 10pm, as this is for security of other guests, particularly those staying in shared rooms.
The outstanding balance of the booking is required upon check-in to The Bug. Payment can be made by cash/credit/debit cards. Any amendments to original booking need to be made directly at reception. Payment for any extras during your stay can be made directly with reception. The balance of the room booking plus any pre-booked extras will be paid on check in. We do charge credit card (VISA and MASTERCARD) processing fees (3%) for purchases and refunds.
BEST AVAILABLE RATE
You are required to pay the exact amount that you made your original booking for. This was our best available rate (BAR) or a special offer at the time of your booking which we are also required to honour. You are able to extend your stay or make an additional booking with the best available rate at this time.
A minimum of 24 hours notice prior to arrival day is required at Almond House for cancellations. During the Christmas festive season this extends to 3 days (72hours) between 23rd December and 3rd January. Cancellations made within 24 hours of check in day will forfeit the full amount for the first night cancelled. For a no-show, we reserve the right to charge for the entire stay if no effort is made to contact us. If we are able to resell some of your booked nights, we may be able to provide you a partial refund, so always make effort to contact us.
Once inside our cancellation period or checked in, we require 72hours notice for any changes or modifications to your booking. We are not obligated to provide you any refund at all, but we will work with you to come to a fair resolution for both parties.
The Bug is not responsible for the loss or damage of any personal goods or valuables. You should ensure that all doors and windows are locked when leaving the room and your personal items are secured. If you are in a shared room, please ensure you lock and secure the room if you are the last one to leave and you always have your key on you.
All visitors to our site must sign the visitors book, while it is your responsibility to ensure they do this. They must not enter any sleeping rooms without you present and you remain fully responsible for them and their behaviour. We reserve the right to ask them to leave if we feel they are disrespectful to other guests or our property, not abiding by our house rules or breaking the law.
Non staying guests are not allowed to arrive after 10 pm.
You accept full responsibility for any charges incurred during your stay and acknowledge that you are personally liable for payment of any loss or damage to the room or property (both malicious or accidental) by you or your guests and that any remaining balances can be finalised on your credit card. You acknowledge that any linen/bed soiling, broken items and smoking in the room will be charged to your card on file with a fee up to $250 NZD. A lost key will result in a fee of $10 NZD per key.
The Bug Backpackers will not share or distribute any personal details obtained through this website. Our secure online booking system is provided through DPS.
